FAQ
TortoiseGit requires Windows 10 version 1607 or newer. The last version compatible with Windows 7 (SP1) is 2.17.0, with Vista (SP2) is 2.4.0, and with Windows XP is 1.8.16.0. Admin privileges are required for installation, and the latest Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable 2015-2022 must be installed. Additionally, a command-line git.exe (Git for Windows 2.24+) is required.
First, ensure your system meets the prerequisites. Then, download the setup package for your system and install it. If you want a localized interface, download and install a language pack. For 64-bit systems, the 32-bit shell extension is included in the 64-bit installer since TortoiseGit 1.7.3.0.
To update TortoiseGit, download the latest setup package and install it. The old version will be replaced automatically. It is recommended to use the automatic updater in TortoiseGit's about dialog to ensure cryptographic verification. If upgrading from version 1.7.3.0 or older on a 64-bit system, uninstall the 32-bit version first.
Icon overlays may not appear if you haven't rebooted your PC after installation. Ensure overlays are activated in TortoiseGit settings (Settings -> Icon Overlays) for the desired drive types. Additionally, Windows limits overlay handlers to 15, with some used by the system and other applications like OneDrive.
If using TortoiseGitPlink (default), refer to the StackOverflow answer linked in the FAQ. For OpenSSH, configure the SSH client to use ssh.exe in TortoiseGit network settings. Environment variables like GIT_SSH can also be set to point to PuTTY's plink.exe or TortoiseGitPLink.exe.
TortoiseGit officially supports only Git for Windows. While Cygwin and MSYS2 Git may work, they are not officially supported due to differences in configuration and behavior. Bug reports for these setups are still welcome.
The FAQ references a StackOverflow answer for this process. Check the linked resource for step-by-step instructions on clearing stored credentials in TortoiseGit.
The commit dialog and other dialogs allow adjusting the size of GUI elements. Use the slider between elements to resize the commit message box vertically, as described in issue #1761.
