FAQ
LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol) is a way of communicating with a directory. It allows you to connect to a directory with varying levels of security, read and write entries, search, rename, and delete entries. It is defined in a number of RFCs, but essentially, it is a way of working with a directory to manage hierarchical data.
A directory is a type of hierarchical database made up of entries, each with a globally unique name and attributes that are named collections of data values. Each entry has a unique name relative to its parent called its 'relative distinguished name' (RDN), and the combination of all its ancestors' RDNs is called the 'distinguished name'.
Directories are optimized for fast lookups, have a strong security model, and scale well. Because they are a tree structure, different parts of the tree can be maintained by different directories and different administrators. The tree data structure also fits some cases much better than a relational database.
LDAP directories are often used for storing large amounts of user information for security authentication engines. Large ISPs, banks, etc., use these to check users accessing websites. However, they can also be used for many other applications, such as persistent storage of Java objects, classification trees, or arbitrary hierarchical data.
You can find more information about LDAP on the Ldap links page. Additionally, you can search for 'ldap directory' or 'X500 directory' in your favorite search engine. There is also a good open-source directory available at openldap.org.
