FAQ
If you enter just a last name, the search will show everyone with that last name at birth by default. It will not include last name variants or married names unless specified.
Wildcards are placeholders for unknown characters. A question mark (?) matches any single character, and an asterisk (*) matches any number of characters. For example, 'J?nsen' matches 'Jensen' and 'Jansen', while 'Jan*' matches 'Jansen', 'Janzen', etc.
Yes, you can include keywords for birth and/or death locations. However, including a location will exclude all private profiles from the search results since birth locations are private for those profiles.
You can use the 'Name on Watchlist' Quick Finder tool, which appears as a search box at the top of every page. Type a name, and suggestions will appear as you type. Clicking a name will take you to the profile.
FindMatches is a tool that searches for ancestor matches for everyone in your Watchlist. You can optionally limit the search to one person or one surname in your Watchlist. Most search options from the main search engine are available.
GEDCOMpare searches WikiTree for every person in your uploaded GEDCOM file. It uses strict settings to minimize false positives, requiring matches for parents' names and gender. Last Names at Birth are only compared with LNABs, and Current Last Names are only compared with CLNs.
WikiTree uses a search index that is fully updated once a day. New profiles may not appear in search results until the index is updated.
The following name fields are indexed: Prefix, Proper First Name, Preferred First Name, Middle Name, Nicknames, Current Last Name, Last Name at Birth, and Other Last Names.
