TightVNC
Free and open-source remote desktop software for secure, cross-platform access
About TightVNC
TightVNC is a free, open-source remote desktop solution that enables secure access and control of computers over a network. Its user-friendly interface allows you to interact with the remote system as if you were physically present, supporting file access, application launch, and more. The software is available for various systems and platforms, with additional tools and SDKs for developers.
FAQ
TightVNC runs on Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, 10, and 11, including corresponding Windows Server versions. Windows XP requires the latest Service Pack. Windows CE is not supported.
Enable port forwarding in your router's configuration to pass external connections to the internal machine. For example, forward TCP ports 5900 and 5800 to the machine's private IP (e.g., 192.168.1.100). Then connect to the router's IP using those ports.
TightVNC encrypts VNC passwords but sends other traffic unencrypted. For secure connections over the Internet, use SSH tunneling. Built-in encryption may be added in future versions.
Press Ctrl-Alt-Shift-F to exit full-screen mode in TightVNC Viewer for Windows. This combination avoids conflicts with remote applications.
For TightVNC 1.x, create a DWORD 'DisableTrayIcon' with value 1 in the registry under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\ORL\WinVNC3. For 2.x, uncheck 'Show icon in the notification area' in the Server tab of the configuration.
TightVNC does not currently offer a Mac OS X version, but you can use the cross-platform TightVNC Java Viewer. Modern Mac OS X systems also include a built-in VNC-compatible server that works with TightVNC Viewer.
Use the Control Panel (Add/Remove Programs) for standard uninstallation. For manual removal, stop the server, unregister it as a service (if applicable), delete the installation directory, and remove registry entries under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\ORL or HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\ORL.
