Taler
Privacy-focused payment system for secure, registration-free transactions
About Taler
Taler is a free and open-source payment system designed for privacy-friendly online transactions. It eliminates fraud by design, requires no user registration, and empowers communities to operate their own payment infrastructure without introducing a new currency.
FAQ
Taler does not require blockchain technology or proof-of-work. Instead, it uses blind signatures for transactions. However, it is possible to combine Taler with peer-to-peer currencies like Bitcoin by withdrawing Bitcoin-denominated coins into a Taler wallet.
Since Taler's digital cash is anonymized, the exchange cannot recover a lost or stolen wallet. You are responsible for keeping your wallet safe. To mitigate risks, make backups or keep your balance low.
Taler uses blind signatures, which prevent the exchange from knowing which coin was signed for which customer. This ensures that your transactions remain private.
Fees are set by individual exchanges and can include charges for withdrawing, depositing, refreshing, or refunding coins. Estimated transaction costs are around 0.001 cent per transaction, though actual costs may vary based on hosting and regulatory requirements.
Yes, Taler supports peer-to-peer payments between wallets. However, the payment service provider may require identifying the recipient before completing the transaction due to legal requirements.
Currently, Taler wallets do not support recurring payments. While theoretically possible, recurring payments could compromise privacy and require the wallet to be online at the time of payment. This feature is not planned for Taler 1.0.
For browsers, visit the Taler wallet install page and select the wallet matching your browser type. For phones, visit an app store and search for the Taler app, with links provided on the wallet install page.
If your device is compromised, an attacker could spend digital cash from your wallet. Check your balance regularly to detect unauthorized spending. Since each coin can only be spent once, double spending is prevented by the exchange.
