LeoFS
NOAA's Lake Erie Operational Forecast System for real-time water level, current, and temperature predictions
About LeoFS
The Lake Erie Operational Forecast System (LEOFS) provides high-resolution nowcasts and forecasts for water levels, currents, temperature, and ice conditions in Lake Erie. Developed by NOAA's CO-OPS and partners, LEOFS uses advanced modeling to deliver four times daily updates for maritime safety and coastal management.
FAQ
Our online data services have limitations on the amount of data that can be retrieved in a single query. To get a longer time series, you can use our Web Services to retrieve data in smaller chunks and compile them as needed.
NOAA provides a relationship between tidal datums and the geodetic datum of NAVD88 where possible. This relationship is noted on the Tidal Datums for that station. If no relationship is established, you can use the Vertical Datum Transformation (VDATUM) tool to calculate it.
'Tide Charts' refer to maps showing water levels at a particular point in time, while 'Tide Tables' provide listings of the times and heights of daily high and low tide predictions or hourly interval tidal height values for a specific location.
Tides are the vertical rise and fall of water, while tidal currents are the horizontal motion of water caused by the tides. The relationship between the times of high/low tides and the times of slack water or maximum current varies by location and cannot be determined by a generic rule.
'Perigean Spring Tides' or 'King Tides' occur when the New Moon or Full Moon coincides with the Moon being at its closest point to Earth (perigee), resulting in a larger than average range of tides.
The accuracy of tide predictions can vary by location and is influenced by various factors. For specific accuracy information, please refer to the NOAA Tide Predictions service.
NOAA provides tide and current predictions for locations around the USA. For predictions outside the United States, you may need to consult the oceanographic agencies in those countries.
Information on obtaining the NOAA computer programs for tide and current predictions is available. Please refer to the relevant resources on the NOAA website for more details.
