Homebrew

You can install Homebrew by pasting the following command into a macOS Terminal or Linux shell prompt: /bin/bash -c "$(curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Homebrew/install/HEAD/install.sh)". The script will explain what it will do and then pause before proceeding. Alternatively, you can download the .pkg installer from Homebrew's latest GitHub release.

Homebrew installs software that Apple or your Linux system did not include by default. It installs packages to their own directory and then symlinks their files into /opt/homebrew (on Apple Silicon). Homebrew won't install files outside its prefix, and you can place a Homebrew installation wherever you like.

To install a package, use the command `brew install `. For example, to install wget, you would run `brew install wget`.

You can trivially create your own Homebrew packages using the `brew create` command followed by the URL of the package. For example, `brew create https://foo.com/foo-1.0.tgz` will create a formula for the package.

Homebrew Cask is used to install macOS apps, fonts, plugins, and other non-open source software. To install a cask, use the command `brew install --cask `. For example, to install Firefox, you would run `brew install --cask firefox`.

Homebrew is built on Git and Ruby, so you can hack away with the knowledge that you can easily revert your modifications and merge upstream updates. You can edit formulae directly using the `brew edit` command followed by the package name. For example, `brew edit wget` will open the formula in your default editor.
