Foundation is free because ZURB created it to help them rapidly prototype client projects and decided to share it with others. They believe in helping people design better products and use Foundation for all their projects, so they made it available for others to use as well.

Foundation is MIT licensed, which means you can use it on anything you'd like, including selling products built with it. You can even fork the framework and make it your own. The only restriction is that you cannot sell Foundation itself.

Foundation for Sites is for building responsive websites like marketing sites or e-commerce. Foundation for Emails helps create responsive email templates for clients like Outlook and Gmail. Foundation for Apps is for building complex web apps with Angular, offering full-screen layouts and native-like interactions.

Foundation does not support IE8 by default because it is built mobile-first and relies on media queries, which IE8 does not fully support. However, if IE8 support is critical, you can use Foundation 3.2, which supports IE8 but is not mobile-first. There are also community resources to help make Foundation 5 work with IE8.
