Cockpit Project
Web-based server management for Linux admins of all levels
About Cockpit Project
Cockpit is a user-friendly web interface for managing Linux servers. It simplifies administration tasks like container management, storage configuration, and network settings while integrating seamlessly with existing command-line tools. Designed for usability, Cockpit supports single-sign-on, extends with third-party apps, and runs efficiently using systemd socket activation. Free and open-source under GNU LGPL.
FAQ
You can file an issue using the Cockpit issue tracker. For general bugs and feature requests, use Cockpit’s issue tracker. For specific parts like the website, virtual machines, Podman UI, or OStree, use their respective issue trackers. If you're unsure where to file, use the general issue tracker. For non-issue questions, ask in the forum or Matrix at #cockpit:fedoraproject.org.
Debian and Ubuntu repositories may have older versions. Check the backports repositories for newer versions. Follow the installation instructions for your specific distribution: Debian installation instructions or Ubuntu installation instructions.
Cockpit runs on port 9090 by default. To change the port, consult the Cockpit guide’s section on TCP port and address.
You can log in via SSH without running the Cockpit socket systemd service. Use the Cockpit Client desktop application on Linux, or run Cockpit’s web server in the cockpit/ws container image on another host with SSH access.
Cockpit supports reverse proxies. Refer to the documentation for proxying Cockpit over NGINX, Apache with Let’s Encrypt, or Pomerium.
Check the browser console (Ctrl+Shift+J) and system logs (sudo journalctl --since "5 minutes ago") for error messages. This may indicate a browser or system issue.
This is due to Ubuntu using netplan and systemd-networkd instead of NetworkManager, causing PackageKit to report the network as offline. Create a dummy network interface or install extra kernel modules as a workaround.
PackageKit, which Cockpit uses for updates, does not support excludes in dnf.conf. Add excludes to .repo files instead, using a space-separated list with wildcards.
